HRC wins the UN World Habitat Award

Hebron Rehabilitation Committee won the World Habitat Award; the award is given annually to projects that demonstrate significant impact within their own communities as well as the potential for the transfer of their practice to other contexts, the award is given by Building and Social Housing Foundation in London.

The announcement was made by Dr Joan Clos, United Nations Under-Secretary-General and Executive Director of UN-Habitat, who commented, “The initiative to address depopulation by rehabilitating Hebron Old City very much satisfies one of our thematic areas in Shelter Rehabilitation, where the main focus is on rebuilding and restoring the center of cities back to their original mixed use.”

The award is given to the projects that provide practical and innovative solutions to current housing needs and problems, on this year competition 283 projects from 80 countries across the world had applied to the award, where Palestine presented by HRC project “Hebron Old City Rehabilitation Programme” was chosen as the winner of the 2013 World Habitat Award, which was announced at the 2013 World Habitat Day celebrations in Medellín, Colombia on Monday 7th of October.
